ASSESSMENT OF FACTORS CAUSING BURNOUT AMONG CONSTRUCTION WORKERS AND ITS IMPACT ON WORKER’S WELLBEING: LITERATURE REVIEW
The construction industry is one of the primary sectors driving economic growth worldwide, yet it is also characterized by a high incidence of stress and burnout among workers. Burnout among construction workers is a significant concern, primarily driven by various workplace and psychosocial factors, and has increasingly affecting both mental and physical well-being. The main purpose of this study was to assess the key factors causing burnout among construction workers, and how its preventive measures to foster positive wellbeing in construction sector. among construction workers. This study adopted a qualitative research method rooted in utilization a literature review approach that aimed to critically evaluate the current state of knowledge on issues of main causes of burnout and its potential preventive measures that would foster positive wellbeing among construction workers. Thus, out of 30 initially selected to conduct this study, only 17 were found to be relevant and resourceful for the study. The study findings indicated that key factors contributing to burnout in construction sector are multifaceted, encompassing workplace culture, inadequate support systems, and the high-pressure nature of construction projects. The study findings further revealed that the prevalence of long working hours and the pressure to meet tight deadlines often lead to an imbalance between work demands and personal life, fostering chronic fatigue and reduced job satisfaction, which in most cases causes inadequate or lack of clear communication, thereby presence of psychosocial stressors—such as workplace conflicts, feelings of isolation and anxiety among workers, creating a toxic work environment that hinders overall productivity. This study further indicated that the impact of burnout among construction workers are reflected in terms of issues such as decreased productivity, higher rates of absenteeism, and a greater risk of workplace accidents, and mental health challenges. The study concluded that it is necessary for construction sector to provide mental health resources- thus, construction employers should prioritize the provision of mental health resources, such as counselling services or wellness programs, to support workers' emotional well-being. The study further recommended that construction industry need to effectively implement participatory interventions, which would involve workers in identifying stressors and developing solutions can be particularly effective.
